John Simpson July 2025
Established in 2017 (1) by Andy Pryce the Veterans Hub was set up to support veterans and their families within the local community. For many the café is their first contact but they provide on site activities such as a fully fitted gym, an allotment and wellness rooms. It also offers drop in clinics and signposts to other mainstream charities and local government services.
Got Your Six UK
Got Your Six UK(2) was developed out of the Weymouth Veterans Hub and is primarily led by Director and qualified Counsellor/Psychotherapist Tara Coyles-Gould as well as Andy and Gareth Bottomley. It’s a Community Interest Company (CIC) promoting and supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the military community. It provides free counselling to hub members for a variety of conditions whether it be service related or transitioning to civvy street. It also provides 6-8 week courses which are part funded with a donation from participants.
Andy and his team have now opened up a new Military Community Hub (run by Got Your Six UK) and Therapeutic Wellbeing Centre in Wincanton Somerset.(3) This replicates the services and will help them to reach out not just to military veterans but to the whole community.
Commentary
I first met Andy at his Hub near Portland in 2019 as Chairman of the Hughes Unit Group Supporters (HUGS) and was so impressed with the work Andy was doing I suggested setting up a symposium/conference in conjunction with the Royal British Legion to talk about how we could provide better support. However just as we were looking to hire a venue COVID 19 broke out and it wasn’t resurrected . Perhaps one day such a conference could take place with all the relevant charities, health services and armed forces involved. It is also the reason why I have created a link to their donation page from MHS.
